Out with the old, in with the new! As we look forward to 2022 and the promise of a fresh start, let's shed some light on a fun tradition for the new year!
Good Luck & Light
Burning bayberry candles on either Christmas or New Year's Eve is a long-standing tradition that is believed to ensure your household enjoys a year of prosperity and good luck. But you must let it burn until after midnight and it must burn itself on its own.
“A bayberry candle/ Burned to the socket/ Brings food and larder/And gold to the pocket.”
This tradition is believed to come from colonial times when bayberry candles were reserved for special occasions. Normal candles for everyday use were often foul-smelling as they were made from animal fat and gave off smoke and a rancid odor. Bayberry candles not only smelled lovely but they also were special in that it took 15 pounds of bayberries to make one candle.
