Urban Wick Candle Bar is excited to offer a special way for you to express your own unique style with our Birthstone Candle Vessels. Every month, we will be featuring a candle vessel in specially selected colors to reflect each month’s birthstone. For August, we are featuring the mystical green-hued Peridot.

Shades of Lush Green

The birthstone of the month of August, the Peridot (pronounced PEAR-A-DOE or PEAR-A-DOT) can range in color from yellow-green, bright light green, olive or chartreuse. The amount of iron in the gemstone determines the shade of its green - the more iron it contains, the deeper the green and the more value it has. The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. is the home of the largest Peridot ever found, weighing in at 319 carats.

Journey Around The Globe

Peridot was mined for over 3,500 years on St Johns Island (formerly Zabargard Island) in the Egyptian Red Sea. Arizona is the main source of this August birthstone in the United States. Around the world, most Peridot is currently mined from China, Pakistan, Myanmar, Tanzania, and Vietnam. One beautiful source of the Peridot is a beautiful beach in Hawaii where the sand is comprised of shimmering green Peridots, one of only two such beaches in the world. In Hawaiian culture, the gemstone is sacred to Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire and volcanoes, symbolizing her tears.

Mystical Powers of Peridot Through History

This August birthstone was valued in many ancient and medieval cultures. The national gem of Egypt, ancient Egyptians knew it as “the gem of the sun” and believed it had special healing powers. Some historians speculate that some of Cleopatra’s famous emerald collection were actually Peridots. In the middle ages, Europeans brought Peridot stones back from the Crusades to decorate church plates and robes.

Many legends speak to the magical power of the Peridot to act as a protective talisman, shielding the owner from the "evil eye" and “terrors of the night,” especially when set in gold. Believed to provide harmony and peacefulness, ancient Romans wore Peridot rings to relieve depression.
